Bunny Boo Has Lost Her Teddy: Jannie Ho

Bunny Boo Has Lost Her Teddy is a really cool bedtime board book! Part of the "A Tiny Tab Book" series, it's sturdy, durable, and has tabs to pull! Your totz may very well be eager to pull each of these tabs as they help Bunny Boo search for her teddy bear, which she must have before going to bed. There are 4 tabs in all (as shown), but the backside of each tab works to reveal something in most cases as well.

Adorably illustrated by one of my favorite (and prolific) board book artists, Jannie Ho, illustrator of my What Does Cow Say?

Kevin Henkes: Little White Rabbit

Don't you love it when publishers convert fabulous authors' picture books into fabulous board books? Take Little White Rabbit by Kevin Henkes. It was released in 2011 and now is available in a small format for the youngest totz.

Little White Rabbit hops into his day with wonder and his imagination. Readers will be challenged to think outside themselves by Rabbit's example. What would it be like to be tall, green, or flutter? Frightened, he hops home where he doesn't have to wonder who loves him.

Kevin's thick green outlines surround soft pencil colors. There's almost a sophisticated coloring book feel to the final art. The board book is the perfect format for text and image. Hop on over and find it at your local indie store or library.

Poetry Friday: Say Hello Like This!

Say Hello Like This

Here's a little hello for Poetry Friday. The beetles really got me: tip tap tip tap tip tap. :~)

"A dog hello
is licky
and loud...
like this!
bow-wow wow-wow!

A cat hello
is prissy
and proud...
like this!
purrrrr...meow

Half-page flaps show the animals meeting and then with a turn they greet each other. The closing rhyme invites a hello from the reader. Celebrate Poetry Friday with a great, big Mary Murphy hello!

Leslie Patricelli: Toot and Tickle

I will always share Leslie Patricelli's work, because each is made of awesome! So today's featured releases are Toot and Tickle.

How can you not laugh reading Toot? Seriously. Baby shares how he toots, where he toots, and when he toots. He reveals others in his family toot, especially the dog. My favorite is the full spread of baby in the tub, tooting bubbles. :~)

And then there's Tickle. Baby insists he's not ticklish. When the Tickle Monster catches him, Baby howls over the attack to his legs, feet, tummy...you get the picture. He still announces at the end he is not ticklish, and he's off and running.

Add these to your Patricelli library. There will be giggles galore!

Poetry Friday: Presto Change-o!

Here's the first Twirl book I ran across at ALA Midwinter Conference. It's big! And it twirls! Presto Chango-o! A book of animal magic is a collection of 17 objects which transform, after a twirl of pieces, into an animal. A teapot transforms into an elephant, while a flower turns into a lion.

There's so much for totz to learn: from manipulating the pieces, to observing shapes, to seeing how changing shapes can completely change an identity. And with rhyming descriptions it's perfect for Poetry Friday!

"Here's a little teapot, filled with magic tea.
Whoever takes a drink of it will soon begin to see,

That they have started growing, tall and grey and wide,
With a long and heavy trunk, and a thick and wrinkled hide."

Holly Meade: John Willy and Freddy McGee

How about a re-release of Holly Meade's John Willy and Freddy McGee? First seen in 2007 in board book form, it's receiving another turn as Amazon purchased Marshall Cavendish. The gouache and cut paper illustrations are inviting and detailed. I particularly enjoy Holly's black line.

The more complex plot of two hamsters escaping their cage and exploring, with a climax in the pool table, is accompanied by a heavier text. The work is appropriate for the older totz in your family. It's easy to see this was originally a full picture book.

John and Freddy are completely adorable, and thankfully, no animals were hurt in the reading of this board book. Not even the Basset Hound or black and white feline.

Poetry Friday: God is Good...All the Time

Scholastic has a religious imprint, Little Shepherd Books, and in celebration of Poetry Friday, I'm quoting from God is Good...All the Time.

God loves to watch you when you play.
What will he see you play today?
God is good...
All the time!

God gives us pets to make us smile.
We can run and play for a while.
God is good...
All the time!

The doctrine is Arminian, and the illustrations portray doe-eyed children enjoying the world and each other. Maybe this is a good fit for your totz on Poetry Friday!
